Interested in becoming a Certified Laser Protection Advisor (LPA) under the British Association of Laser Safety (BALS) certification scheme?

Our certification process has been designed to recognise experienced laser safety professionals who demonstrate the knowledge, competence, and professionalism required to advise on the safe use of lasers within their field of practice.

 

Applicants should have practical experience in laser safety together with a sound understanding of relevant legislation, standards, risk assessment, and safe working practices. Whether your expertise is in medical, aesthetic, industrial, research, or educational applications, certification is awarded only to those who can demonstrate an appropriate level of competence.

The Certification Process

Step 1 – Initial Application (£100)

Submit a short application together to the following address, (Office 53C, Unimix House, Abbey Road, London, NW10, 7TR) which should include:

• Your current CV.

• A professional letter of recommendation.

• A small selection of example laser safety work (such as a risk assessment, Local Rules, safety audit, training material, or other relevant documentation). A large portfolio is not required.

Your application will then be reviewed by the Association to determine whether you meet the criteria to proceed to interview.

Step 2 – Professional Interview

Successful applicants from the initial application stage will be invited to attend a professional interview with representatives of the British Association of Laser Safety. The interview is designed to assess your practical knowledge, professional judgement, and understanding of laser safety principles within your area of expertise.

Step 3 – Certification

Applicants who successfully complete the interview will be awarded certification as a British Association of Laser Safety Certified Laser Protection Advisor (LPA).

Following successful certification, an annual membership and certification fee of £250 is payable. This fee maintains your certified status, inclusion within the Association's public directory of Certified Laser Protection Advisors, and access to ongoing professional resources, updates, and continuing professional development opportunities.

Certification demonstrates that you have met the Association's recognised standards of professional competence and enables organisations and clients to identify you as a trusted Laser Protection Advisor through the official BALS directory.
